Talk One on One with 140+ Suppliers

THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2017

More than 140 exhibitors are slated to have a presence on the SSPC 2017 Exhibit Floor in Tampa, giving you the opportunity to talk directly to suppliers of abrasives, coating materials, application equipment, inspection equipment and professional services, among others.

Things kick off with the annual Exhibit Hall Reception, sponsored by The Sherwin-Williams Company. Gather at the show floor for the ribbon-cutting that opens the exhibit hall at 5 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 31). For the next three hours, you can be among the first to visit the exhibitor floor and see some of these selected features.

Contests and Photo Ops

If you’ve got that competitive spirit, take advantage of the chance to test your painting skills. VRSim Inc. (East Hartford, CT) is sponsoring the SimSpray Virtual Reality Paint Competition at booth #1005. There, you can use virtual reality to spray paint, compete for the best score and win valuable prizes—as well as to earn some bragging rights! The contest is open to all attendees and exhibitors, and prizes will be awarded daily.

Among the many special features on the exhibit floor during SSPC 2017, Strategic Materials is giving attendees the opportunity to meet Rick Dale, host of the History Channel shows American Restoration and Rick’s Restorations at booth #922.

Television personality Rick Dale, of the History Channel shows American Restoration and Rick’s Restorations, will be on site Wednesday (Feb. 1) as part of a free event courtesy of Strategic Materials (Houston). Visit booth #922 between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. for a meet-and-greet with Rick. As an expert at restoring antiques and collectibles, he has been a long-time user of the company’s crushed glass products, according to Strategic Materials. His wife Kelly, who had a supporting role on the show, will also be joining him on site. The first 100 people at the booth can get a signed photo of Rick, and anyone can take a picture with him on their personal phone/camera.

For the third year, SSPC (Pittsburgh) will feature its Poster Session display in the Exhibit Hall Tuesday through Thursday. For the 2017 presentations, poster authors will display five posters demonstrating their work. Don’t miss the chance to speak with the authors, who will be available at their boards on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and again on Wednesday between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Product Features and Demos

Visit Carboline Company (St. Louis) on site to see demonstrations of its cloud-based app, TAM+, an engineered software tool for surveying asset conditions. This iPad app was designed to help owners understand and plan how to care for their corroding assets and budget accordingly, the company says. Stop by the booth for a demo and to request any of the 30 different reports, Carboline says, some of which include a Coating Survey Report, Paint Schedule Report, Cost Analysis Report and Daily Inspection report.

DeFelsko Corporation (Ogdensburg, NY) is featuring two of its recently launched products during SSPC 2017: the new PosiTector SST Soluble Salt Tester and Bresle Method patches for measuring the concentration of soluble salts on metal surfaces, and its new PosiTest LPD Low-voltage Pinhole Detector.

Many of the suppliers of abrasives, coating materials, application equipment and inspection equipment who are on site will show and demonstrate new products. DeFelsko Corporation, for example, will feature its new PosiTector SST Soluble Salt Tester, as well as its PosiTest LPD Low-voltage Pinhole Detector.

According to the company, the PosiTector SST is the first conductivity probe designed specifically for the Bresle Method and is compatible with any Bresle Method patch, including the new PosiPatch and DeFelsko Adhesive Patch. DeFelsko says its new PosiTest LPD uses a wet sponge to detect holidays, pinholes, discontinuities and other coating flaws on metal and concrete substrates without damaging the coating.

Safway Services LLC (Waukesha, WI) will be hosting presentations at booth #335 at nine specific times throughout the show. These five- to ten-minute presentations will cover the features, advantages and benefits of its products. SSPC attendees who are present for the entire demonstration will be entered to win an iPad Air 2. The presentation schedule is: Tuesday at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Wednesday at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m.; and Thursday (Feb. 2) at 11 a.m., noon, and 1 p.m.

Visitors to Covestro LLC (Pittsburgh) booth #540 can learn how its range of raw materials and solutions are used in coatings to preserve and protect applications ranging from bridges and railcars to structural steel and flooring. Several real-life examples will be on display, giving attendees the chance to see Covestro’s raw materials in action. Moreover, booth visitors can learn how its raw materials help formulate a variety of floor coatings to provide abrasion resistance that can extend service life and reduce maintenance cost.

For the past decade, this two-coat polyaspartic urethane coating has protected this Virginia bridge carrying Interstate 64 over Route 269 from corrosion, Covestro says.

Elcometer (Manchester, U.K.) is featuring its new Elcometer 500 Coating Thickness Gauge for coatings on concrete during the show. According to the company, the new gauge accurately measures the thickness of dry film on concrete and other cementitious substrates up to 10mm thick (on epoxy coatings 150µm – 10mm [6.0 – 390mils]). Moreover, the tool is said to be three times faster than other technologies, providing 60+ readings per minute in standard mode and more than 140 readings per minute in scan mode. Stop by the Elcometer booth for a demonstration and for more information.

Strategic Materials is launching its new crushed-glass abrasive, called TruAbrasives. This product reportedly differs from its predecessor, New Age Blast Media, because the company has made operational, packaging and sourcing improvements to provide a high-quality, high-performing product to the industry. “We believe now more than ever, the industry is looking for a more well-rounded abrasive, taking into consideration health and environment, while still maintaining performance,” it says. TruAbrasives will be available for purchase as of April 1.

Stop in with Barton International (Glens Falls, NY) to learn more about its recently introduced MG1 grade, which reportedly complements its wide range of garnet abrasive products. MG1 is aimed at new construction applications, where thin coatings/mill scale and light rust are to be removed, and where a deep anchor pattern is not required—1.5-2.0 mil is the ideal profile range for MG1, says Blast Media Market Manager Joe Morris. He adds that it’s also proving to be popular with wet blast and vapor blast equipment.

In terms of health, safety and the environment, Barton notes that many questions have been raised regarding the new OSHA standard related to respirable crystalline silica. The company says it recently undertook a lengthy project involving an independent third-party lab to confirm its products fall below the new permissible exposure limit (PEL). Visit with on-site representatives to learn more.

Wrapping It Up
