System Boasts Fast Dry, Low VOCs

WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2016

A new coating system from Hexion Inc. (Columbus, OH) is touted as offering performance that compares to solvent-borne systems while meeting stringent volatile organic compounds regulations, but without the premium price often associated with high-performance waterborne epoxies.

The key to this new system, according to the company, is a water-soluble amine curing agent called Research Curing Agent RSC-4431. This solvent-free curing agent has a lower equivalent weight, it adds, which means that formulators can use less to cure the same amount of epoxy resin.

The NextGen Epoxy Waterborne System is also said to offer improved product stability, superior freeze-thaw stability and an extended working pot life of 5 to 6 hours with superior gloss.

The NextGen Epoxy Waterborne System is also said to offer improved product stability, superior freeze-thaw stability and an extended working pot life of 5 to 6 hours with superior gloss.

When combined with its EPI-REZ Resin 7520-WD-52 system, the company claims the curing agent can deliver lower VOCs, faster dry and good hardness development.

The NextGen Epoxy system can be used to formulate ultra-low VOC coatings on concrete at less than 50 grams per liter (g/L) VOC content, and on metal at less than 100 g/L VOC content, according to the manufacturer.

“We are excited at the prospect of our NextGen Epoxy system making waterborne, ultra-low VOC coatings more accessible to a wider range of coatings customers because of its unique balance of performance and price,” said Dan Weinmann, segment leader for Coatings & Civil Engineering at Hexion.
