Roof Coatings for LEED v4 Explored

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2015

To help stakeholders understand the cost contributions of roof coatings and the environmental benefits of using LEED v4 specifications, the Roof Coatings Manufacturing Association has created new guidance.

The RCMA said Tuesday (Dec. 8) that the new white paper updates its Reflective Roof Coatings and LEED white paper that was originally issued by the Reflective Roof Coatings Institute (RRCI) in 2012.

The new, 16-page document, according to RCMA, explores the role of reflective roof coatings in the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Version 4 green building program.

It focuses on the emphasis of such things as new building structure; existing building operation and maintenance; LEED v4 prerequisites; and credit requirements.

Paper Topics

According to the updated paper—Reflective Roof Coatings and LEED v4—the purpose of the update is to:

  • Raise awareness of the qualities and attributes of reflective roof coatings in the green building industry and the LEED v4 rating systems;
  • Encourage stakeholders to value reflective roof coatings in the integrative design process when resolving price/cost/value design and construction budget issues; and
  • Enable LEED project teams to evaluate reflective roof coatings when compiling LEED v4 credit requirements.

The RCMA has updated its white paper on the benefits of reflective roof coatings in sustainable design to help reflect the LEED v4 improvements.

The updated paper dives into some of the reasons for the LEED v4 changes. Among those, integrative design is now a prerequisite for healthcare facilities to receive the accreditation and an optional credit for most other building systems, the white paper says.

As the association that supports those who use reflective roof coatings as a means to achieve greater sustainability, the RCMA notes that applying a reflective roof coating helps facilitate those achievements.

The paper looks at several project challenges and how applying reflective roof coatings helped those projects earn LEED v4 certification. For example, a steel-framed building in South Carolina used a metal roof reflective coating to limit interruptions and avoid what would have been a cost-prohibitive, roof removal job, RCMA said.
