Pantone Releases 2023 Color of the Year

TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2023

Global color and design company Pantone recently released its 2023 Color of the Year, revealing a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family.

PANTONE Viva Magenta 18-1750 vibrates with vim and vigor, and is expressive of a new signal of strength, the company said in an emailed press release. The animated red hue is also noted to encourage experimentation and was designed with new narratives proposed within the metaverse in mind.

“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of The Pantone Color Institute.

“Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”

Exploring the Magentaverse

As part of its 2023 color announcement, Pantone and ARTECHOUSE have created an immersive art experience dubbed the “Magentaverse.”

Curated and designed by ARTECHOUSE Studio, the multisensory exhibition explores the Pantone Color of the Year 2023 like never before. According to the Magentaverse description, the installation presents a fully immersive experience that allows guests to feel the power of a hue scaled to fantastical proportions.

While it is noted to be the fourth year the two companies have partnered together on a Color of the Year project, the exhibition is the first to be open to the public. Beginning on Dec. 3, 2022, attendees are able to visit the exhibition at Art Basel in Miami Beach. On Jan. 21, an exhibit will also be opening at ARTECHOUSE’s New York City location.

Although no palette collections have been released by the color-producing company, Pantone has highlighted several other hues featured in the Magentaverse. These colors include:
