New Wood Finish Launched for Weathered Look

THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 2017

Rust-Oleum (Vernon Hills, Illinois) has launched a new wood finish product designed to achieve the “weathered” wood look.

Marketed for use on furniture and other wooden surfaces, the Varathane Weathered Wood Accelerator is said to aid designers in replicating a weathered look. The company also released its Varathane Wood Grain Enhancer, which brings out the dual tones in wood. Both are aimed to eliminate the need for buying new pieces at a premium retail price.

The company’s goal for the wood accelerator is for the finish to mimic the grayed aging process that happens in nature. This finish works best with bare or untreated wood and takes about 30 minutes to one hour to dry into the weathered look after application.

The enhancers are recommended for wood that has a significant grain pattern, such as oak. The tone of the wood would also indicate whether the designer should use the white or black enhancer, the company says. While both can also be used on bare wood, the white enhancer is recommended to be paired with a dark wood or dark finish and the black enhancer would ideally be used with sunbleached or antique white wood.
