Since revealing its new look in April, JPCL is continuing to flourish in its role as the independent voice of the industry and is optimistic about the days ahead for not just the publication, but the industry as it emerges from the other side of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
“After a long year of pandemic-induced uncertainty and instability for many of us, it looks like there’s finally a light at the end of the tunnel—or, for those in the industry, on the other side of the bridge—with recent news one the fight against COVID-19,” Editor-in-Chief, Charlie Lange writes in this issue’s letter. “As vaccination rates continue to go up and infection rates and deaths go down in the U.S., masking and social distancing restrictions are being lifted and many of us are getting back to life as we knew it. Job sites are opening back up, and the thought of traveling to in-person events soon for some much-needed networking and face time with colleagues again doesn’t seem so far off.”
Following Lange’s optimistic message on the days ahead and what’s to be expected from JPCL in the upcoming months, Technology Publishing Vice President, Creative and Custom Media, Ashley Pound, provided a deeper insight to the magazine’s recent redesign and what readers can continue to expect as the publication continues to rebrand itself as the independent voice of the industry.

Following introductions and publication news, readers will find the “Coverage” section, which provides an enhanced selection of the top coatings’ news and comments, as well as a regulation piece regarding OSHA COVID-19 updates by Alison B. Kaelin. Further into the issue, readers will see its monthly installation of “Bid Bits,” which offers information on the ongoing George Washington Bridge restoration project, a project preview involving an upcoming tank repainting project in Texas and a contract award for an underpass update project in Illinois.
As a tribute to longtime coatings influencer, the May issue of JPCL features a special profile on Doni Riddle of Sherwin-Williams focusing on his career and recent retirement. After a nearly 40-year career in coatings, Riddle’s profile reflects on some of the highlights of his tenure in the industry, lessons he’s learned, advice he’d give to his colleagues and well wishes from his many industry peers.
In the magazine’s first feature, Sangki Chi, Ebad ul Haque and Shaj K. Manjalivalapil, Saudi Aramco, discuss several abrasives that are used for blasting, including non-metallic materials that normally originate from natural resources and thus create procurement issues due to their scarcity in the market. In, “Performance Test Results of a New Artificial Non-Metallic Abrasive,” the authors evaluate an alternative abrasive material—ferrochrome slag—and its performance in the laboratory, shop and field.
Moving into “Building a Better Bridge Painting Program,” Tony Serdenes, Gannett Fleming, Inc. gives those tasked with the upkeep of bridges the means to articulate the requirements needed to develop a good specification, identify maintenance considerations that will achieve (or even exceed) the life expectancy of the newly applied coating system, and find industry standards referenced in the specifications, along with programs that certify contractors and train inspectors.
Finally, the independent issue closes with “An Unexpected Sighting in the Roswell Desert,” by Patrick J. Brown, Tank Industry Consultants. For citizens of Roswell, New Mexico, theories surrounding the alleged UFO crash near their hometown in 1947 are familiar lore, but today’s residents have been audience to an entirely different sighting—the sight of two elevated composite tanks seemingly sprouting from the city’s dessert landscape. This article recaps the construction, coating work and inspection of the two new 750,000-gallon tanks.
JPCL Archives, Subscriptions
Following the release of the May issue, the magazine will be added to the JPCL archive—containing 25 years of JPCL digital issues dating back to 1996—which covers a priceless collection of evergreen information, solutions to real-life problems, case studies, insight from experts and a historical record of the industry.
In 2020 alone, Technology Publishing CEO Brion Palmer reported that more than 25,000 industry professionals accessed the archives. However, the content is only available to current JPCL subscribers and in separating from SSPC, is no longer an association benefit.
Interested readers have the option for domestic one-year print and digital edition subscriptions and international one-year print and digital edition subscriptions. JPCL is offering one-year digital-only subscriptions and group subscriptions for domestic one-year print and digital editions as well.
