JPCL January Issue is Now Online

TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 2021

The January issue of the Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings is now online, available through options including an interactive digital edition, a full complement of web content and downloadable PDF.

Inside the Issue

Opening a little differently than previous issues, the January edition of JPCL starts off with a special message from JPCL-publisher Technology Publishing Company’s CEO Brion Palmer. In the message, Palmer touches on the approaching changes in wake of the recent merger between SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings and NACE International to form the Association for Materials Protection and Performance.

Through the merger, Palmer confirmed that the AMPP leadership team decided that JPCL would no longer serve as a member benefit, officially ending a 37-year relationship. Moving forward, JPCL plans to reintroduce itself as the fresh, independent voice of the industry, effective with the April 2021 issue.

More changes in the issue include the return of the Applicator Training Bulletin series. In this issue, the ATB column offers practical advice for coatings professionals regarding cleaning and painting galvanized steel. The column was originally written by Lloyd M. Smith, PhD of Corrosion Control Consultants and Labs, Inc, and was published in the April 2001 issue of JPCL; it was updated for the current issue by JPCL staff.

In line with the ATB, the first feature is brought to us by John Krzywicki, American Galvanizers Association, and is entitled, “Galvanizing In Action: Capping Corrosion on Bridges with HDG Steel.” In the article, Krzywicki discusses the hot-dip galvanizing process, which involves having steel components immersed in a molten bath to form a zinc protective coating. The process has been used for decades in industrial construction to provide a protective layer from corrosive elements. The article also highlights four bridge projects that employed galvanizing—both with and without duplex protective coating systems—to provide long-term, maintenance-free corrosion protection in different service environments.

In “Study of Stockpiled, Fusion-Bonded Epoxy-Coated Pipe: Part II: Influence of Ultraviolet Exposure” by Keith E.W. Coulson and James Ferguson, TC Energy, the authors discuss a recent evaluation program by a Canadian pipeline owning and operating company that was carried out on the coating integrity of stockpiled fusion-bonded epoxy-coated pipe for the expansion of the Keystone XL pipeline project. The second of a two-part series, this article covers the second portion of this overall refurbishment program of pipe stored in Canada to examine the consequences of long-term storage on coatings.

Lastly, Robert Dahlstrom, Apellix, and Michael Hindmarsh, AkzoNobel, take a look at how drones are entering the industrial coatings industry to keep workers safe in “Industrial Cleaning and Coating Drones: A Look at What’s Coming in 2021.” Specifically, the authors discuss how nondestructive measurement drone capabilities have evolved over the past few years and offer a preview of cleaning and coating drone systems that are currently under development.
