Coatings manufacturer Jotun (Sandefjord, Norway) has announced the opening of a new research and development center focused on passive fire protection and insulation coatings at its facility in Flixborough, U.K.

The Flixborough site, which has hosted Jotun operations since 1989, will now see additional testing and research on intumescent coatings and other passive fire protection, in a two-floor, 17,200-square-foot building that the company says officially opened March 30.

Jotun officially opened its new Flixborough R&D facility on March 30.

The new investment, which the company says was £4.5 million ($5.6 million), was first reported in December 2015. It will supplement the work done at Jotun’s already-established PFP development site, in Dubai.

“We’re experiencing sustained growth in our advanced fire protection coatings segment and we want to build on that momentum,” said James Irving, Jotun R&D manager. “We already have a cutting-edge fire and insulation research facility in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and this new center will work in tandem with that established team, increasing capacity and accelerating new developments."

Facility Features

The new Flixborough facility features two furnace areas for the testing of intumescent coatings, in addition to labs, mill rooms, offices and plant space. The company says clients will have the ability to watch intumescent coatings while they are tested in the furnaces.

The new Jotun facility serves as a center for the development of passive fire protection coatings.

Jotun’s PFP and insulation offerings include its Steelmaster range of cellulosic fire protection coatings for steel substrates, and Jotachar, the company’s line of mesh-free PFP epoxy coatings for the oil and gas industry.

“This is an investment with the potential to create a hugely positive ripple effect,” Irving said. “Our customers will see further innovations in a range that already boasts market leading protection and an unrivalled temperature tolerance range, while the local community will be boosted by the creation of a world-class research and development facility.”
