Industrial Spray-On Insulation Debuts

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2016

A new spray-on insulation for high-temperature industrial applications offers personal protection from extreme heat while preventing corrosion under insulation, according to its manufacturer.

PPG HI-TEMP 707 HB spray-on insulation coating is developed to operate under conditions where pipes and other structures are exposed to process temperatures between -57 and 177 degrees Celsius (71 and 351 degrees Fahrenheit), the company says. Applications include petrochemical, nuclear and process plant structures.

A product of PPG Industries’ protective and marine coatings division, the spray-on insulation  coating helps prevent burns and complies with the ASTM C 1055 standard, the company notes. The standard requires that the surface temperature of the part of a structure that workers can access be between about 58 to 60 degrees Celsius, or 137 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

The spray-on insulation coating can be applied directly onto surfaces as hot as 150 degrees Celsius (302 degrees Fahrenheit). With the ability to be spray-applied at 1,250 micrometers (50 mils) per coat, application is easy and the speed of application reduces the cost of insulating structures by as much as 33 percent, PPG says. The company also says the coating can save up to 9 percent compared to competitive spray-on insulation products.
