Goodwin to Receive ASTM Honor

TUESDAY, MAY 10, 2016

ASTM International’s Committee on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates will present its Award of Merit this year to Fred Goodwin, of BASF Construction Chemicals.

The Award of Merit is the highest honor bestowed by ASTM on an individual for contributions in developing standards; the award will be presented to Goodwin at the committee’s meeting, set for June 26-29 in Chicago.

Goodwin is head of the BASF Construction Chemicals Corrosion Competency Center. He has been an ASTM member since 1991, and has worked to develop standards related to hydraulic cement grouts, volume change, packaged dry materials and polymer modified concrete and mortars, according to ASTM.

Goodwin was previously honored by ASTM with an Award of Appreciation. Having been honored with the Award of Merit this year, Goodwin will now be known as an ASTM Fellow.

“I am truly honored to receive this award," Goodwin told Durability + Design News. "ASTM is the leader in standards and has taught me a great deal that is useful in all parts of my career about technical document creation, consensus development, and the requirement of patience to address all sides of an issue.

"My philosophy for gaining technical knowledge has evolved to: If you want to learn about a subject, join a committee, since the topic will be taught by the best teachers (the individuals who use the standard), and the homework must be done or your peers will know about it.”

Other Honors

Goodwin is also a fellow with the International Concrete Repair Institute and the American Concrete Institute. He is a NACE Corrosion Technologist and a member of SSPC and the ACI Strategic Development Council.

Goodwin has received the Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings’ Editor’s Award three times—in 2006, 2010 and 2012—and in 2011, he was named to JPCL’s Clive Hare Honors list of 24 “top thinkers” in the world of protective and marine coatings.

He has also received awards from ACI and its related entities, including the 2011 Delmar Bloem Distinguished Service Award and the 2015 Jean-Claude Roumain Innovation in Concrete Award.

Prior to joining BASF, Goodwin worked at Degussa Construction Chemicals, ChemRex, Mapei Corporation and River Cement Company.
