In preparation for Super Bowl LVIII, crews are painting in and around Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to welcome players and fans to the championship game.
The Kansas City Chiefs will face off against the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday, Feb. 11, as they round out the 2023 National Football League season.
About the Stadium
Dubbed the “Death Star,” after the space station in the original Star Wars trilogy, Allegiant Stadium opened in 2020 as the then-Oakland Raiders relocated to Las Vegas. The $1.9 billion project was constructed next to the Las Vegas Strip with a domed roof and a 65,000-seating capacity.
Most of the stadium’s interior, exterior and structure surface were reportedly finished with PPG materials. PPG announced the partnership with the NFL’s Raiders in February 2019, which was billed as a multi-year corporate marketing agreement. The terms were not disclosed.
For the project, PPG said that it recommended its PPG Amercoat 68 HS and PPG PSX 700 coatings, which were specified in custom-formulated “Black Gold” and “Silver Fox” colors to meet and match the team’s silver and black uniforms.

The grass surface was shipped in from California and has been undergoing tests for the last few weeks.
It gets sunlight during the day and will be moved into the stadium via a retractable tray on gameday.

The PPG Amercoat 68 HS is a three-component zinc-rich epoxy primer, that aims to provide corrosion protection with the ability to be top-coated quickly. The PPG PSX is a finish coat that aims to deliver adhesion as well as corrosion and chemical resistance, along with gloss and color retention.
Other products used throughout the stadium include Perma-Crete interior/exterior alkali resistant primer and a Speedhide interior eggshell latex enamel. Pitt-Glaze WB1 acrylic epoxy coatings were used in high-traffic areas and Seal-Grip alkyd universal primers were used to protect numerous interior and exterior surfaces.
Super Bowl Prep
According to the NFL Football Operations team, an all-new natural grass surface was installed on a retractable tray outside the stadium to prepare and test leading up to the game.
“We have brought in a brand-new grass field. We are working through all of our standard testing procedures that take place from installation all the way up through the day before the game,” said Peter O'Reilly, NFL Executive Vice President of Club Business, International, and League Events.
“The natural grass surface is installed right now and we have a great team maintaining it as we head towards the Super Bowl.”
While typically the field’s endzones feature “Las Vegas” and “Raiders” in silver and black, work has been completed to create both the red and gold names of the Chiefs and 49ers. The midfield logo has been painted as the NFL shield, flanked by two Super Bowl LVIII logos. A drone from FOX5 Las Vegas captured workers laying down the red for the “L” in “NFL.”
Additionally, the league took extra measures this year regarding the grass field’s condition, after there were issues of players slipping on the field at State Farm Stadium during last year’s championship.
“This surface has been nurtured from the time the grass was planted to the Super Bowl,” said Jeff Miller, the NFL’s vice president of communications. “It’s maintained with a number of tools and metrics.
“Our field management expert has been on this for weeks and has visited the field frequently and will do so over the next two weeks ahead of the game.”
The outside of the locker rooms have also reportedly been painted to welcome the teams to Las Vegas.
Painting work was also completed not just on the field, but outside the stadium as well. Several local Las Vegas artists were selected by the ZAP program, which brings public art to neighborhoods throughout the county, to paint utility boxes around Allegiant Stadium.
In total, 18 utility boxes around the stadium were reportedly designed and hand-painted by these artists, each displaying a “piece of Las Vegas pride.”
