Employer Fined for Abrasive Blasting Worker Death

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2024

A company in Nipawin, Canada, has pled guilty to a safety violation that fatally injured a worker while using an abrasive blaster last year. According to the Government of Saskatchewan, Kevin’s Custom Ag Ltd. violated The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020.

The company was reportedly charged with contravening clause 24-8 (2) (b) of the regulations. This specified that the employer “failed to provide and maintain approved blasting hoods supplied with air that is clean and at a reasonable temperature for workers engaged in abrasive blasting, resulting in the death of a worker.”

The charges stemmed from an incident that occurred in February 2023, when a worker was fatally injured as a result of carbon monoxide exposure while using an abrasive blaster.
