The worker can be seen pouring the coffee into white paint, warning the customer that the can won’t shake properly enough to mix the paint if she puts in too much. The worker then closes the lid and takes the paint can to get stirred in the machine.

While the final result isn’t shown in the initial TikTok, the Home Depot worker opens the can in front of the women and reveals that the result of their experiment is a beige paint. “I love it,” the coffee woman says before thanking the worker and leaving with her paint and coffee cans, Daily Dot reports.

A recent TikTok video has reportedly gone viral after one customer asked a hardware store employee to add ground coffee to her white paint.

One TikToker wrote: “Why? You’re just gonna have grounds getting clumpy when you try to paint the walls.”

“You know they can just color match the coffee with the computer,” another commented.

According to House Digest, adding coffee grounds to paint can provide a gritty texture or an antiqued furniture look, in addition to providing a way to upcycle the beans. The reason for this is that grounds include natural pigments and oils, including soluble compounds that can add a unique tint to water or paint.

However, the publication notes that it would be useful to add a powder plaster mixture and warm water in addition to the coffee. Application also might require two coats to get the desired texture before letting it dry completely.

Additionally, it would reportedly be necessary to sand it down and seal with a polyacrylic sealer to prevent any chipping.

The paint will have various textures depending on how much is added to the mix, as well as the coarseness of the coffee. The color could also vary from a cream shade to a deeper, “coffee-rich” shade.

House Digest also warns that painters should be prepared for challenges, as the paint might not spread as evenly or as far with the added thickness.
