Coating Award Nominations Invited

SSPC is seeking outstanding, innovative and challenging commercial and industrial painting and coating projects for its 2013-14 Structure Awards.

The annual awards recognize teams of contractors, designers, end users and coating manufacturers for excellence on a variety of coatings projects.

Nominations are due Oct. 15. The awards will be presented Feb. 10 at an Awards Luncheon at SSPC 2014, featuring GreenCOAT. SSPC 2014 will be held Feb. 10-13 in Orlando, FL.

The winning structures will also be featured in a photo essay in JPCL after the conference.

The Trails Arch Bridge won an SSPC 2013 George Campbell Award.

SSPC is looking for nominations for all types of structures: commercial facilities as well as bridges, tanks and other industrial structures.

Individual award descriptions follow. Except for the Charles G. Munger longevity award and the Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence, the projects must have been completed between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013.

William Johnson Award: For outstanding achievement demonstrating aesthetic merit in industrial or commercial coatings work. Aesthetics include color, gloss or texture, and the degree to which the structure complements the environment. The coating may represent a theme, an object or a specific graphic design.

Crone Knoy Award: For outstanding achievement in commercial or industrial coatings work that demonstrates innovation, durability or utility. The qualities that may represent outstanding achievement in this area include excellence in craftsmanship or execution of work, use of state-of-the-art techniques or products to creatively solve problems or provide long-term service.

Charles G. Munger Award: For an outstanding industrial or commercial coatings project demonstrating longevity of the original coating. The structure may have had spot repairs or overcoating with the original coating still intact.

Renovation of Canada's BC Place earned a George Campbell Award at SSPC 2013.

George Campbell Award: For outstanding achievement in the completion of a difficult or complex industrial or commercial coatings project. This may include work in harsh or extreme environmental conditions; work completed under strict time constraints; work done with limited access or in high traffic areas; work on a structure with complex structural components; or a project that requires coordination with multiple trades or subcontractors.

Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence: This award is in recognition of the exceptional coatings work performed on U.S. military ships, structures or facilities.

A representative of the structure's owner must attend the luncheon to accept the award and must give permission for the project to appear in JPCL.
