China Concert Hall Project Nears Completion

THURSDAY, JUNE 15, 2023

According to reports, the new China Philharmonic Concert Hall was recently wrapped in a translucent facade that resembles a piece of jade as the project nears completion. The new 26,000-square-meter (279,861-square-foot) building is located next to the Workers' Stadium in Beijing.

The concert hall will be the first permanent residence for the country’s philharmonic orchestra and is described as “one of the most significant cultural projects in the nation’s capital.”

About the Project

Project architect MAD Architects reports that the project aims to “create a new formula for concert hall design and introduce a space within the busy city that promotes conversations between people, nature and music,” rooted in Eastern philosophy.

MAD envisions the concert hall, designed in collaboration with acoustic expert Yasuhisa Toyota, who previously has designed concert venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Philharmonie de Paris and the Suntory Hall in Japan, as a “hidden gem and a peaceful cultural escape from the city.”

“We wanted to create a pure and sacred oasis in the midst of the bustling city,” said Ma Yansong, founder and principal partner of MAD Architects. “From the moment you enter the building, you will be taken to another time and space.”

The music venue will consist of 1,600 seats organized in a “vineyard style,” as well as several rehearsal spaces across the two floors. The wooden walls were curved and shaped to optimize acoustics, and white sound reflection panels, inspired by lotus flowers, can be found on the ceiling.

The building also includes a professional recording studio, a library, a collection gallery, offices, rehearsal rooms and other auxiliary function spaces.

Arch Daily reports that the secondary reflection contributes to the bright image of the façade, and the number of devices is reduced in areas of the building to create an “ethereal” lighting effect from a distance.

The facade system reportedly employs embossed glazed glass panels to make the building appear white while allowing natural light to enter the interior.

“The lighting devices are installed parallel to one another on the main steel structure and longitudinal structure to illuminate the translucent membrane surface from behind and softly brighten the facade through secondary reflection,” the studio explained.

The concert hall will also be home to an 88-pipe organ with different heights and mouth positions to resemble a field of bamboo, designed by specialist Casavant.
