Remember to vote for your favorite Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings articles from the past year, as the voting deadline for 2021 JPCL Readers’ Choice Awards has been extended to Friday, April 1.
“We owe recognition to our outstanding contributors for providing the articles that make JPCL the trusted industry resource that it has been for the better part of the past four decades,” said Charlie Lange, JPCL Editor-in-Chief. “The JPCL Readers’ Choice Awards give our readers the chance to applaud the authors that keep them informed and, ultimately, help them do their jobs better.”
Voting for the program’s fifth consecutive year opened earlier this year and will now officially close at the end of the day on April 1. JPCL readers are encouraged to vote for their favorite articles published between January 2021 and December 2021. The articles from the year are classified into four categories:
“As we are now an independent publication, our readers and contributors are more important to us than ever,” added Lange. “By involving our readers in the process, we get to truly realize which articles from the past year had the greatest impact on the industry, and properly commend those authors.”
The winning articles and authors will be announced in the April issue of JPCL. To cast your vote, click here.
Process Technology Articles
Each week until the voting deadline, PaintSquare Daily News will delve into each award category to provide recaps of each eligible article. This week, we will review the articles included in the Process Technology category.
The first article from this category is “Galvanizing In Action: Capping Corrosion on Bridges with HDG Steel” written by John Krzywicki, American Galvanizers Association, and published in the January 2021 JPCL. This article highlighted four bridge projects that employed galvanizing—both with and without duplex protective coating systems—to provide long-term, maintenance-free corrosion protection in different service environments.
Next, J. Peter Ault, Elzly Technology Corporation, and Rob Lanterman, KTA-Tator, Inc., authored “Automation in Action: Options for Autonomous Surface Preparation and Coating Application,” which examined some of the ways in which automation is being used to improve surface preparation, coating and inspection processes, and highlighted several examples of currently employed technologies, including on marine ballast tanks and other industrial applications. This article was published in the April 2021 JPCL.
“Study of Stockpiled, Fusion-Bonded Epoxy-Coated Pipe: Part II: Influence of Ultraviolet Exposure” was written by Keith E.W. Coulson and James Ferguson, TC Energy. The article, published in the January 2021 JPCL, described the second portion of this overall refurbishment program of pipe stored in Canada to examine the consequences of long-term storage on coatings.
In the September 2021 JPCL, Ryan Wixson, TMS Metalizing Systems, Ltd.; and Cooper Curtis, Highmark Marine Fabrication, LLC, authored “Metalizing Alaskan Marine Structures: A Field-Friendly Method of Corrosion Protection.” This article outlined the basics behind surface preparation and metalizing of steel structures, using specific examples of successful metalizing applications from one fabricator in Kodiak, Alaska.
“Industrial Cleaning and Coating Drones: A Look at What’s Coming in 2021” by Robert Dahlstrom, Apellix, and Michael Hindmarsh, AkzoNobel, was published in the January 2021 JPCL. The authors discussed how nondestructive measurement drone capabilities have evolved over the past few years and offered a preview of cleaning and coating drone systems that are currently under development.
Finally, Damien Ranero, Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division; and Anthony Monda and Patrick Cassidy, Elzly Technology Corporation, wrote “Optimized Surface Preparation for Coated Aluminum Substrates in Marine Environments.” This article from the November 2021 JPCL outlined a testing program that investigates the factors that can contribute to premature coating delamination on aluminum surfaces on U.S. Navy ships.
