Brenntag Named Nouryon Polymer Distributor

FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2022

Global specialty chemicals company Nouryon recently signed an exclusive agreement with chemical and ingredients distributor Brenntag Specialties to serve as the distributor of its LumaTreat tagged polymers.

The agreement reportedly covers a portfolio of Nouryon’s polymers, as well as providing ingredients for industrial and commercial cooling and heating systems. Brenntag will offer a portfolio designed to reduce risk and downtime for industrial water treatment system operators as the sole distributor of LumaTreat.

“Our distribution agreement with Brenntag ensures that Nouryon’s portfolio of innovative and essential water treatment solutions is available to our customers in the US and Canada,” said Joppe Smit, Nouryon Vice President of Natural Resources.

“Nouryon’s customers will benefit from the combination of highly trained sales and technical teams, formulation support, comprehensive regulatory know-how, and exceptional quality and service.”

According to the company’s release, Brenntag will also distribute select Nouryon water treatment technologies, including Aquatreat, Versaflex and Versa-TL polymers. These provide scale control and dispersancy, acting as deposit-control agents that prevent scale and debris from adhering to the heat transfer surfaces.

Global specialty chemicals company Nouryon recently signed an exclusive agreement with chemical and ingredients distributor Brenntag Specialties to serve as the distributor of its LumaTreat tagged polymers.

“The addition of the LumaTreat polymers to our expanding portfolio gives our company another innovative tool to help solve scale and deposit issues in a multitude of industrial water treatment applications,” stated Brian Liotta, Director, Water Treatment, Brenntag Americas.

“The ability to reduce treatment costs through accurate monitoring also provides opportunities for reduced water use and helps with overall sustainability goals.”

About LumaTreat, Recent Patent

Earlier this month, Nouryon announced it has been granted a U.S. Patent for its LumaTreat tagged polymer products and the fluorescent monomers used in their creation. The company reports that LumaTreat tagged polymers allow customers to measure available deposit-control agents in water treatment systems and reduce polymer and water usage during treatment.

Reportedly in line with Nouryon’s commitment to providing innovative and essential solutions for a sustainable future, U.S. Patent No. 11,208,408, “Method of Controlling Scale in Aqueous Systems,” covers LumaTreat products, enhancing the environmental footprint of operations.

The product was introduced in April last year, with Nouryon noting at the time it was working in partnership with customers on additional versions to be introduced later.

The continuous operation of water treatment systems, cooling towers and boilers are vital for production and manufacturing sites. However, the accumulation of scale deposits can degrade the overall efficiency and lifespan of these systems. This could lead to failures or shutdowns that would be detrimental to operations in industrial facilities such as pharmaceutical production facilities, refineries and hospitals.

According to the emailed press release, LumaTreat tagged polymers use fluorescent monmoers that “smart tag” the deposit-control polymers used in water treatment to prevent the build-up of calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate and other minerals that produce scale deposits. These fluorescent tagged polymers then allow water treatment professionals to troubleshoot through remote and accurate monitoring of polymer consumption, decreasing the risk of estimation errors.

Additionally, they can reportedly be used in combination with or as an alternative to pyrenetetrasulfonic acid (PTSA) in water treatment formulations to indicate real-time consumption rates of the active polymer. This permits for more precise measurements in reducing polymer dosage and water usage while remote monitoring can eliminate the need to travel to sites.

The patent was granted to Nouryon by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on at the end of 2021. The company reports that additional Nouryon patent applications claiming priority to this patent family are currently pending in several jurisdictions, and LumaTreat tagged polymers have received regulatory approval in the U.S.
