Global coatings company AkzoNobel recently released information about supplying coatings to the LNG Canada Project, located in Kitimat, British Columbia, that’s touted as the largest-ever liquid natural gas project.
The project will reportedly feature four processing units with a capacity of 28 million tons per year. The LNG supplied by the new facility will reportedly have the least CO2 per ton of any LNG produced in the world and will be destined for primarily China and Japan.

“We’re excited to be part of such a grand global project, which will eventually benefit tens of thousands of new energy users in Asia,” says Amanda Sheng, Director of AkzoNobel’s Marine and Protective Coatings business in Greater China.
AkzoNobel says that it is providing coatings from its Chartek line (epoxy intumescent) for the first phase of construction, which involved building 25 core modules in China.
Once the core modules have been constructed and coated (which is expected to take around 18 months), they will be shipped to Kitimat for assembly. The goal is for the coatings to provide functionalities such as anti-corrosion, passive fire protection and cryogenic protection.
