This webinar describes the most commonly used field methods for the retrieval and analysis of soluble salts on steel and other nonporous substrates. Coatings applied on surfaces contaminated with soluble salts exceeding a certain concentration exhibit diminished performance. This presentation is intended to assist the user in selecting specific procedures for retrieving and analyzing soluble salts. It discusses the various methods for retrieving salts from a surface and the analytical methods used to determine the concentration of the soluble salts in the extracted solution.

Lisa Detter Hoskin, Principal Research Scientist Georgia Tech Research Institute
Dr. Lisa D. Detter-Hoskin is a Principal Research Scientist in the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). She has degrees including a Ph.D. in Inorganic chemistry from Purdue University and a M.S. in Management of Technology from Southern Polytechnical State Institute. She has been the Director of GTRI’s Materials Analysis Center for 16 years.
She has decades of theoretical and applied knowledge of materials testing, forensics and failure analysis. She has evaluated electronics, polymers/co-polymers, corrosion (chlorine, chlorine acids and ammonium nitrate/ammonia), phosphors, minerals, inks, paper, rubbers, paints, coatings, pigments, micro-channel plates, novel materials for prosthetic devices, ceramics, composites, catalysts (air-sensitive catalysts), textiles, foodstuffs, drugs, and carbon nanomaterials.
Dr. Hoskin’s corrosion research includes steel, stainless steel, galvanized steel, copper, brass, aluminum alloys, and titanium and tantalum coated alloys. She is particularly knowledgeable of aggressive inorganic acid induced corrosion reactions, field and lab testing, corrosion remediation and corrosion inhibitor systems. She has developed hot water ultrasonic extraction procedures for greater extraction efficiency of soluble salts from corroded metals.
She has had twenty five consecutive years of funding from DARPA, DOD, DOT, and hundreds of industrial firms. She and her research group are US experts on the exploitation of camouflage, countermeasures and deception (CCD) materials and paints. She also provides technical and legal consultation on insurance settlements, patent infringements, and accidents involving materials, failure analysis and corrosion.
Her professional memberships include the ACS; NACE; MAS; SSPC (Committee Chair SSPC-Guide 15, Field Methods for Retrieval and Analysis of Soluble Salts on Steel); and SEEMS.
