How much will it cost to clean 1,000 square feet of lightly rusted surface per SSPC SP-2? Apply a 1 mil-thick layer of alkyd epoxy on 20,000 square feet? Airless-spray three coats on 100 meters of pipeline?
Such project costs are now easy to figure—free—with a nifty new online calculator developed for the protective coatings industry.

CoatingsCalculator.com is a suite of online budgeting calculators created by James McDonald, a 10-year veteran of the coatings industry.
The tool includes calculators for surface preparation; application; tanks and vessels; pumps, valves and pipe; structural steel; and psychro (dew point) readings.
Users plug in their specific project variables, from detailed drop-down options, and the tool calculates the rest.
Made for on-site use by engineers, estimators, asset owners, procurement professionals and field personnel, CoatingsCalculator.com is designed to quickly and accurately compute common complex calculations so that material lists and preliminary budgets are available on the fly.
Filling a Gap
McDonald has owned two abrasive-blasting and painting companies and has sold coatings for a major manufacturer. Through all those experiences, he says, he saw a gap in budgeting tools.
“I saw an opportunity to take industry standard formulas and format them in a user-friendly interface that provides instant functional information,” he says.
Metric and Imperial calculators were formatted for mobile devices early this year for ease of use around the world, McDonald says. The tool is free, with no registration required.
McDonald says the calculations are “pretty darn precise,” but reminds users: “You can't hold anyone liable for not ensuring the accuracy of your data.”
