Cloud-Based System Monitors Pipelines

Willbros Group Inc. has teamed up with GeoEye Inc. to offer a cloud-based pipeline integrity management system that integrates real-time pipeline data with high-resolution commercial satellite imagery.

Developers say the system provides “timely and cost-effective access to accurate integrity management data” to help owners and operators maintain and improve their pipeline systems and comply with regulations and standards.

Google Earth Builder

Built on the cloud-based Google Earth Builder platform, the system augments customers’ current Geographic Information Systems (GIS) platforms with a single source for accessing pipeline integrity information for about half the cost of traditional methods, developers say.

“Real-time access to intelligence stored in the cloud will radically change the way pipeline owners and operators conduct business, respond to issues and maintain regulatory compliance,” said Ed Wiegele, Willbros President of Engineering and Integrity.

“This platform solves many of the issues the pipeline industry has faced over the last decade by connecting people with the tools they need to access, correct and maintain information about a pipeline’s complete lifecycle.”

Data Collection, Connection

The system allows users to access real-time pipeline data and enables efficient field data collection, developers say. Field personnel can connect to, and update data from, laptops, tablets, smart phones and other portable devices.

“Timely access to current, high-resolution pipeline imagery plays a critical role in delivering the clear and timely insight required for effective management across the pipeline integrity lifecycle,” said Dean Edmundson, Vice President of Business Development for GeoEye.

The companies did not immediately release the name of the system, and a request for more information received no response.

Willbros Group Inc. is an independent contractor providing engineering, construction, turnaround, maintenance, and other services to the oil, gas, power, refining and petrochemical industries.  GeoEye provides high-resolution satellite imagery and geospatial intelligence solutions to the defense, infrastructure and other industries.
