The secrets of more productive, safer abrasive blasting will be the focus of a free upcoming webinar presented by JPCL and SSPC.

“Achieving Efficiency in Abrasive Blasting” will be presented from 11 a.m. to noon EST March 14.

Abrasive blasting is a controlled erosion process where productivity can be measured by how much area is blasted, by what time is expended, and by how much abrasive and energy are used. This webinar will cover all of these metrics, together with a description of control system types, impediments to productivity, fine-tuning a blast system, suggested system set-up, and safety considerations.

The presenter will be Bill Nelson, of Axxiom Manufacturing Inc. Nelson has 22 years of experience in the abrasive blasting industry and has conducted multiple blasting practice seminars and demonstrations.

This program is part of the JPCL/SSPC Webinar Education Series, which provides continuing education for SSPC recertifications and technology updates on important topics.

SSPC is an accredited training provider for the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE), and Professional Engineers in Florida may submit SSPC Webinar Continuing Education Units to the board. To do so, applicants must download the FBPE CEU form and pass the Webinar Exam, which costs $25.

“Measuring Adhesion to Concrete,” presented Feb. 23, discussed the secrets of performing an accurate, reliable adhesion pull-off test. The presenter was David Beamish, president of DeFelsko Corp., which manufactures hand-held coating test instruments.

“Quality Control of Industrial Painting Operations,” presented Feb. 15, covered many of the issues involved in controlling the quality of workmanship related to coating application. The presenter was Bill Corbett, Technical Services Manager for KTA-Tator Inc.

“Field-Applied Fluoropolymer Coatings for Bridges,” presented Feb. 8, discussed the use of FEVE fluoropolymer coatings as topcoats on bridges. The webinar also reviewed Japan’s experience with using fluoropolymers as topcoats on bridges.

“Illumination of Industrial Painting Projects,” presented Jan. 18, provided information on the quantity and quality of lighting on industrial painting projects that is most conducive to achieving quality surface preparation and coating application, productivity, inspection and other quality control activities, and accident prevention.

“Calculating Coating Lifetime Costs,” presented Dec. 19, helped untangle the complex considerations involved in determining a coating’s true cost. Presenter Jayson Helsel, of KTA-Tator Inc., explained how to identify coating systems for various service environments, estimate their service lives, calculate the installed cost, and determine the most cost-effective system on a long-term basis.

“Comparison of Documentation, Hold Point and Quality Control Training Requirements in Various SSPC Contractor QP Standards,” presented Dec. 14, provided an overview of SSPC’s QP standards that are used in the Painting Contractor Certification Program (PCCP) and described the scope and content of QP 1, QP 3, QP 6, and QP 8. The webinar also explained requirements for training, hold point observations, and QC documentation.

“Practical Coating Thickness Measurement Overview,” presented Dec. 6, focused on factors that influence coating thickness measurement, along with a streamlined means of normalizing and verifying gauge accuracy. The presenter was Paul Lomax, of Fischer Technology Inc.

“Aerial Lift and Scaffold Safety,” presented Nov. 30, focused on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s requirements for use of scaffolding and aerial lifts in the construction industry.  The presenter was Stan Liang, a Certified Industrial Hygienist and Certified Safety Professional with KTA-Tator Inc.

“Spot Repair and Priming as an Alternative to Full Coating Removal,” presented Nov. 16, reviewed the design of spot repair (as opposed to full coating removal) and described the benefits of this coating option in terms of economics, corrosion control and aesthetics. The presenter was Tony Serdenes, Regional Vice President/ Director of Coatings for Greenman-Pedersen Inc. and a 30-year veteran of the coatings industry.
