Offering proof positive that any activity turns interesting once there’s skin in the game, a web site in the UK has announced a new global competition for watching paint dry.

“We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘I’d rather watch paint dry’ and so we have decided the time has come to give people the chance to do so, for as long as they can bear,” reports localtraders.com, a contractors’ site, in announcing “the first-ever World Watching Paint Dry Championships.”

Heart of a Champion

The new competition is a spirited initiative by sporting locals whose hearts have been broken once too often by standard events.

A web site in the UK has announced a new global competition for watching paint dry
With enough “mental strength, concentration and endurance,” he may already be a winner.

“After so many sporting disappointments, we’re keen to invent a sport which England can excel at—and watching paint dry could be just the thing,” organizers say.

“Let’s be honest: With England’s recent performances on the football and rugby pitches, most of us would prefer to watch paint dry anyway.”

Contestant Requirements

To enter, hopefuls must post a picture of themselves watching paint dry “and state the longest time they’ve managed to stare at a wall of drying paint without looking away,” the rules say. Contestants also must state their favorite color and explain why it is their favorite.

Shortlisted entrants will be invited to attend “a grand finale in front of the world's media” in central England.

The finals will pit a half-dozen international paint watchers against one another, vying for the coveted world title and “an exciting prize” that was not disclosed.

‘A Real Test’

“The competition will be a real test of both endurance and mental strength,” the organizers say.

“Entrants don’t need to be physically fit or participate in a vigorous training regime; what’s more important is mental strength, concentration and endurance.”

They add: “Previous paint watching experience isn’t essential, but a bit of practice might help prepare you for the mammoth task ahead.”
