Aqua-Thane, the waterborne, high-performance, protective coating from Excalibur, can now be used for direct-to-metal applications, the company has announced.

The patent-pending coating is “the first commercially usable/viable pigmented waterborne polyurethane from a U.S. company that provides outstanding performance for onshore and offshore environments and meets and/or exceeds the performance specifications of traditional solventborne counterparts,” according to the manufacturer.

Aqua-Thane can be applied as a DTM coating

Thus, says Excalibur, two-component Aqua-Thane can now be applied as a DTM coating with wet film builds of 10-12 mils (5-6 mils DFT) without the foaming or gassing normally associated with 2K waterborne polyurethanes.

Applications

The manufacturer recommends the low-VOC, HAPS-free coating for protection of aluminum and structural steel in environments where gloss retention and corrosion protection are primary requirements. This includes aircraft, computer cabinets, land and offshore drilling platforms, rail, transportation and wind generation.

The coating is formulated to provide exceptional depth of image, abrasion, solvent and chemical resistance, while remaining both hard and flexible. It is designed to adhere to a wide variety of surfaces, including steel, aluminum, galvanized metals, PVC and fiberglass composites. The product was originally rolled out in April 2010.

Excalibur’s AU Series technology, which includes Aqua-Thane, thus fills a “market need for a high-performance, environmentally friendly coating alternative for protection of critical infrastructure and equipment,” the manufacturer says. “Not only are maintenance and protection of key assets assured, but environmental compliance is easier and work conditions for coating applicators are improved.”

Approvals

Excalibur says Aqua-Thane has been approved by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), oilfield services provider Weatherford International, and aircraft manufacturer Cessna.

Based in Wichita Falls, TX, Excalibur Paint and Coatings Ltd. manufactures high-performance waterborne technology for a variety of industrial sectors. The company also offers a line of solvent-borne products. The product line includes epoxy systems, alkyd coatings, corrosion-inhibitive primers, polyurethanes and chemical-resistant linings.
