Nitto Construction Co. Ltd.’s CTS-02 Concrete Tester and Surveyor, now available in the United States, is designed to test concrete strength twice as fast and more accurately than conventional rebound hammers.
Without causing damage, the device measures and analyzes concrete strength by the waveform of impact force at the point of hammer and concrete contact; it also calculates the deterioration and delamination condition. A built-in accelerometer measures blow force.
Applications and Performance
Nitto says the unit is widely used in Japan and South Korea for new construction site testing, existing construction site monitoring and quality assurance testing, defect inspection and other applications involving concrete structures.

The unit offers greater accuracy, easier use, and more consistent readings than either a rebound hammer or a conventional impact sounding method, the manufacturer says. The CTS-02 provides real-time deterioration detection and localization of defects at a lower cost than conventional models, according to Nitto.
2 Measurement Modes
The CTS-02 features Point and Area Measurement Modes.
Point Mode (conventional rebound hammer mode) automatically generates the mean value with ±20% range after hammering concrete 20 times (in a 150mm square). Measurements outside the range are eliminated. After each hit, the LCD screen displays the mean value within two seconds. Point Mode automatically processes the data according to ASTM guidelines used by the rebound hammer method.
Area Mode (surveying mode) tests a concrete area by dividing testing blocks. Area and line numbers from measurements are classifiable, and the level of deterioration and delamination are estimated based on the impact waveform.
To determine Surface Deterioration Indication Value, the rate of velocity when the hammer initially contacts the concrete is measured against the velocity of rebound.
Delamination Indication Value indicates damage (possibly due to freezing or thawing) based on the existence of several local peaks on the impact waveform.
Other Features
The portable CTS-02 sets up in seconds; the user simply turns it on and hits, with virtually no calibration needed, the manufacturer says. CTS-02 body size is 4.25 x 7.9 x 1.8 inches and weighs about 1 pound, 10 ounces.
