Selecting and Sourcing Coatings for Transmission Pipelines

The California Department of Transportation will open bids May 18 for recoating and related work on three bascule bridges in the Sacramento area.

The painting contract is estimated at $7.9 million.

Scope of Work

The project involves recoating steel and reconstructing railings on all three bridges. The work includes abrasive-blast-cleaning and recoating structural steel surfaces on a 588-foot-long bascule bridge and on a 342-foot section of a 624-foot-long bascule bridge, both over the Sacramento River.

The project also includes cleaning, spot-abrasive blast-cleaning and priming corroded steel, as well as overcoating a 340-foot-long bascule bridge over Steamboat Slough. About 15,980 square feet of steel will be spot-abrasive blast-cleaned and spot-primed.

Sacramento River Bridge

The steel on all three bridges will be recoated with a waterborne system. The existing coatings contain lead; containment is required. SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications are also required. The project specifies 210 working days.
