After 15 years in the European marine market, Grace Distributing has introduced LifeGuard Active Rust Primer to North America.
The manufacturer calls the water-soluble, ultra-low-VOC (2%), acrylic copolymer primer “completely environmentally friendly and extremely tough on rust.” The product is designed for application under extreme marine conditions and for industrial and automotive purposes.
The product has been sold as Active Rust Primer 662 SG in Europe, where it has been used for years in a variety of offshore, industrial and marine applications, including ballast tanks, hulls, decks, equipment, rigs and cargo holds.
Features and Application
Grace says the primer doubles the life of the topcoat and is suitable for all corrosion prevention applications.
Surface preparation requires only pressure washing; the company says its customers use a variety of methods, from ST 1 to SA 2.0 or equivalent standards by means of hydro jetting.
The single-component primer requires no mixing and can be applied in temperatures as low as 33°F using brushes, rollers or sprayers. Clean-up is with soap and water.
The company says the primer is UV resistant, allowing for time before topcoating, and adheres to all marine topcoats. Two thin coats (2-3 mils each) are recommended, with a two-hour dry time between coats.
The primer will also adhere to any existing paint, including coal tar primers, the manufacturer says. The product can be used in maintenance applications above the waterline or for full hull priming in drydock.
